China steps-up on safety inspections

In a reaction to the overwhelming amount of recalls on Chinese products such as toothpaste, pet food, and toys, Chinese president, Hu Jintao, told President Bush that China was taking measures to be more vigilant in their safety inspections of these toys. This should help ease the minds of some Americans who were concerned by the recent mass recalls of their Chinese products. Regardeless of promises that Jintao might make, this can't be good for the stereotype of generally "cheap" chinese products.

Chinese products are "highly" regarded by the American people because they are so cheap--just take a look at your local Walmart. But adding these new manufacturing regulations and safety protocols would bump up the prices of these products and lower the only type of appeal they have--cheaper than dirt. When you buy such cheap products you should expect them not to be the highest quality, but they should not potentially kill you or your pet. Now that the Chinese are under the watch of American consumers even more, the markets for their products could be diminishing soon.

While this is very serious and should cause a stir in the US, i doubt the sales on Chinese products decreases because most people do not check to see where an item was made. Cheap Chinese products sell so people are more likely to buy something based on its price than on its safety and durability.
